Music For An Unknown Galaxy by BrosandiRelease date: January 1, 2018
A magical ambient start. Boarding has begun and the anticipation of the ride through this unknown galaxy is palpable. Ambient guitar in behind a wonderful melody on keys? One never knows anymore with the plethora of pedals available and the soaring imaginations of well practiced artists. Ah, with ‘Intro’ we’re in and the ride has started. From the ambient backdrop to the clean guitar playing over top, ‘Before We Knew’ elicits wonder and curiosity. Just under the two-minute mark it stops and we enter another dimension. Something more tethered than not. The ambient score in behind is no longer there and replaced with a repetitive guitar riff as if politely saying, “hello, listen to me”. The track morphs again with tremolo picking and distortion. Slightly turbulent but fitting nonetheless. ‘Before We Knew’ it, the track ends and we return to the clean guitar sound.
‘After We Knew’ begins with some lovely and lush reverb. Wonderful guitar work here, with contrasting melodies and an awesome bass sound in behind. A blow-horn on a flying ship passing us with a great salutation. Another break and sounds of water quickly come in and disappear. Ambient guitar sounds come back, shimmering over the track. Then descending into noise, heavy bass line and the shimmering guitar trying to push its way through it all.
‘Outro’ prepares us for the way home. Don’t be fooled since the ride is slightly more ominous. Definitely has a Carpenter influenced vibe. With bellowing guitar sounds, heartbeat like rhythm in behind and looped tremolo. Past the three-minute mark, the track changes again but this time into something entirely different. The change is happily indescribable and sets my insides in utter turmoil. It’s that kind of feeling that gets you right in the gut and lingers there for a while. It’s full of expression, a sonic soundscape that stops you in your tracks, hits you right in the feels, as a good friend of mine often says. What a wonderful way to end the journey.
From the album title to the succinct track titles, Music For An Unknown Galaxy is a great debut album for Ottawa’s Brosandi.
