We’ve been huge fans of BIINDS for some time now so we’re always excited when new material from them lands. Next week they are releasing a new single in the shape of this remix by Klaas von Karlos of their 2017 track ‘It Is I’.
“The title of this remix is a reference to Brandon Lee’s iconic performance in the Alex Proyas directed film, “The Crow.” I finished the primary structuring of Nicolo’s original compositions and recording of new synth and drums while watching the film on mute during Devil’s Night (October 30, 2017). I found Nicolo’s original composition too be very beautiful, delicate, and masterfully restrained. When he approached me for the remix, I knew that I wanted to bring forth the underlying tension of the song, and expose the heavier, dissonant, and disruptive elements that [in my mind’s ear], teem beneath the surface of my favourite BIINDS tracks. With that methodology in mind, I experimented with a new method of tuning and sequencing my drums in a browser-based synth to come up with glitchy, industrial breaks to channel the storm from beneath the calm.
Sonically, the piece evoked a sense of facing one’s own reflection, both dark side and light. We look int the mirror and find ourselves face to face with a Stranger, and we ask, “Who am I? Naturally, there is but one answer: “It is I.” said Klaas of his remix.
“What I wanted to achieve for this track in particular was definitely something lo-fi, distorted, broken even. As I had been experimenting with photography (I bought a disposable camera and shot the surroundings of my neighborhood) and a broken VHS recorder, I combined both worlds by layering photographs with the footage. I felt that the abstract rhythms needed to be highlighted visually, so I did that but I also wanted the visual to function on its own.” says Nicolo of the band about the video. Check it out.
