Dinosaur Pile-Up - The Most Powerful EP...

The first thing that struck me about The Dinosaur Pile-Up’s debut EP, modestly titled ‘The Most Powerful EP In The Universe’, is the quality of the sound they’ve generated. It’s a truly beautiful thing, full, warm, fuzzy but with hard edges. Obviously, the second thing that struck me was the quality of the songs.

The five tracks on this record all bristle with controlled aggression and have a swagger uncommon in a band so fresh in to a new career. The EP kicks off with the aptly named ‘Summer Hit Single’ that should it get enough airplay must surely live up to its title. It’s a catchy little number with a big riff and melodic hook somewhat reminiscent of The Foo Fighters at their most playful.

As you work your way through the songs here you get the distinct feeling that these guys have grown up listening to much of the grunge cannon that emerged from Seattle in the 1990’s but these guys are not copyists, they’ve taken these influences and added a twist to them that comes from their own upbringing in the North of England. ‘Opposites Attract’ is a grinding number that brings to mind Mudhoney had they had a more passing acquaintance with melody.

The final track, ‘Beach Bug’, is my personal fave though. A proper head nodder with a monster grove and great changes of tempo to really shake your hair to.

These guys have been generating a lot of noise lately, and on the strength of the five songs here it’s really not hard to see why. They’re hitting the Festie circuit later this month and that should bring them to the attention of a good deal more people and then we’ll be expecting a belter of an album soon. No pressure then, lads.

Top Tracks: 'Beach Bug', 'Summer Hit Single’.
